Dr Sharron Flahive
Dr Sharron Flahive is widely recognised as one of Sydney’s leading Sports Physicians. She has practised medicine for over 21 years (15 years specialising in sports medicine). She was awarded the Gold Medal for the Australasian College of Sports Physicians Part II Final Qualification Examination in 1998. Sharron is a full Fellow of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians and has been a Partner of this practice since 1999.

Sharron was the first female Sports Physician to be appointed to a professional rugby union team in 1999 when she was appointed as the Chief Medical Officer of the NSW Waratah Rugby Team. She has retained this role with the NSW Waratahs since the date of that appointment.

In professional sports the difference between success and failure is often the effective prevention, identification and timely rehabilitation of injured athletes. In Sharron’s opinion, these principles are just as important to prevention and rehabilitation of injuries to recreational athletes of all ages.

Sharron’s position with the NSW Waratahs is unique in professional sports medicine in that she has been able to develop and institute programs with a group of elite athletes over a sustained period. Programs have been tailored to selected athletes for both seasonal peak performance and physical development over their respective careers.

Her prevention and rehabilitation programs are attracting global peer recognition and she has been asked to present her findings as a key note speaker at the World Congress on Low Back Pain in Barcelona (Nov 2007).

It is a law of nature that at different stages of our lives we feel un-well, fall sick or are injured. The key to rehabilitating any sickness or injury is early and accurate diagnosis. Sharron seeks to transfer the principles of elite athlete injury prevention and rehabilitation to recreational athletes of all ages.

Patients of Sharron will note two fundamental features of her treatment. Firstly, that each patient is an individual that needs to be managed on an individual basis. Secondly, some patients do require further specialist investigation. It is the identification of the very best specialist medical talent for that patient’s particular ailment in a timely manner that is critical in the first instance. In all instances, a carefully calibrated rehabilitation program designed for the individual and managed by the best medical care is what really makes the difference in a patient making their best possible recovery.
